Book Week in Darra - More than just costumes and story time
At Scotts Road Childcare in Darra, Book Week is one of the highlights of our year. While we love a good dress-up day, Book Week for us is about so much more. It’s about making stories feel alive for every child and showing them that books can be just as exciting as their favourite activities.
Not every child will sit quietly with a book. Some are happiest when they’re moving, building or exploring. Our Book Week approach is about meeting children where they are and creating moments that spark curiosity about reading.
Why Book Week is important in the early years
The early years are the perfect time to nurture a love of stories. Language, storytelling and reading help grow vocabulary, listening skills and imagination. Book Week gives us a chance to focus on these experiences in a way that feels fresh and exciting.
For some children, Book Week is their first big memory of celebrating books. For others, it’s a chance to discover a new favourite story or see a familiar book in a whole new way.
Because Scotts Road Childcare is part of the Darra community, we also see Book Week as a wonderful way to bring families, educators and children together in a shared celebration of stories.
Supporting reluctant readers
Some children are natural book lovers, others need a little more encouragement. Book Week is a great time to gently introduce reading in a way that feels fun and relaxed.
Wordless picture books are a favourite for many reluctant readers. They allow children to create their own stories without worrying about reading the words.
Interactive read-alouds are another way we keep interest high. Educators pause to ask questions, act out scenes and invite children to share what they think will happen next.
Movement-based stories encourage children to move their bodies as they read along, helping them connect reading to physical activity.
Play-based extensions mean that the fun doesn’t stop when the book ends. After a story, children might build, paint or roleplay to explore the ideas from the book even more.
Families as part of the celebration
Book Week doesn’t stop at the centre door. Families play a big part in making reading part of everyday life.
We love sharing simple ways families can enjoy Book Week together:
Visiting the library in Darra or nearby suburbs to choose a Book Week title
Listening to audiobooks at home or in the car
Reading books based on topics the child is passionate about – from trucks to animals to dinosaurs
Inviting older siblings to read aloud or tell their favourite stories
These small moments make a big difference in how children feel about books.
The benefits for children
Book Week is about more than fun activities. These experiences help children build important literacy foundations. When children see reading as something they enjoy, they develop:
A wider vocabulary
Stronger listening skills
Confidence in telling their own stories
Better comprehension from linking stories to real-life experiences
These skills support children as they move into school and beyond.
Book Week as part of our approach to literacy
At Scotts Road, literacy isn’t limited to a single week in the year. Storytelling, phonics, songs and language-rich experiences are part of our programs every day.
Our Preschool & Free Kindy Program integrates these experiences into daily routines, helping children develop a love of books over time. Book Week is simply a joyful highlight of the year – a chance to shine a spotlight on the stories we love.
