How OSHC builds confidence, independence and social skills
Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) is a space where children can unwind, connect and explore after their school day. It’s a place that encourages friendships, independence and a strong sense of self. At Scotts Road Childcare in Darra, our OSHC and Vacation Care programs give children time to learn through play, follow their interests and enjoy being part of a supportive group.
Building confidence through everyday choices
Confidence grows when children feel capable and supported. At OSHC, we create an environment where every child is encouraged to try new things, share their ideas and take part in activities they enjoy.
Children might choose to help prepare afternoon tea, join in a group game or work on a creative project. Each experience helps them feel proud of their efforts and recognise their abilities. Our educators are always nearby to listen, guide and celebrate progress, helping each child feel secure as they explore what they can do.
Encouraging independence
OSHC is also a time for children to develop independence in a relaxed way. They have the freedom to make decisions about how they spend their time and to take small responsibilities that build confidence.
This might include setting up play areas, helping a friend or deciding what activity to lead next. These moments of ownership give children a sense of trust and belonging.
Healthy habits are part of this too. We encourage children to care for their environment, tidy up together and choose from nutritious afternoon snacks. These daily routines help children feel organised and responsible while enjoying the fun of shared time.
Growing friendships and social skills
Children learn so much through play and connection. OSHC brings together children of different ages, personalities and interests, helping them build important social and emotional skills.
Group activities encourage teamwork and communication, while shared games or creative projects give children the chance to practise empathy and cooperation. Friendships often grow naturally during these times, helping children feel included and confident in social situations.
Supporting each child’s wellbeing
Our educators take the time to get to know each child. They focus on creating a calm, friendly atmosphere where everyone feels welcome. Whether a child joins regularly or just during the holidays, we make sure they settle in comfortably and have plenty of opportunities to connect with others.
By providing the right mix of structure and freedom, children can relax and follow their interests while feeling supported every step of the way.
Learning, fun and connection
Our OSHC and Vacation Care programs offer a variety of experiences that nurture curiosity, creativity and movement. Children can choose activities like outdoor games, cooking, art, music or science projects. Each day is designed to feel balanced and enjoyable.
We know that families rely on quality care that fits into their routines. With flexible hours, caring educators and a safe, welcoming environment, our OSHC program supports both children and parents throughout the school year and holidays.
